Ĭomputer simulations suggest that Theia was traveling no faster than 4 km/s (14,000 km/h) when it struck Earth at an estimated 45-degree angle. Theia was eventually perturbed away from that relationship by the gravitational influence of Jupiter, Venus, or both, resulting in a collision between Theia and Earth. Bodies are not to scale.Īccording to the giant impact hypothesis, Theia orbited the Sun, nearly along the orbit of the proto-Earth, by staying close to one or the other of the Sun-Earth system's two more stable Lagrangian points ( i.e., either L 4 or L 5). ![]() Collision Īnimation of collision between Earth (blue) and Theia (black), forming the Moon (red and gray). Gravitational perturbations by Venus could have eventually put it onto a collision course with the early Earth. ![]() In that case, it would have grown, potentially to a size comparable to Mars, with a diameter of about 6,102 kilometres (3,792 miles). Theia is hypothesized to have orbited in the L 4 or L 5 configuration presented by the Earth–Sun system, where it would tend to remain. In modern Greek, it has the same origin as the words "θείος" (theios) and "θεία" (theia) ('uncle' and 'aunt', also meaning 'divine' in Ancient Greek). Theia was named after Theia, one of the Titans, who in Greek mythology was the mother of Selene, the goddess of the Moon, which parallels the planet Theia's collision with the early Earth that is theorized to have created the Moon. Theia may have formed in the outer Solar System and provided much of Earth's water. Theia is hypothesized to have been about the size of Mars. Theia could explain why Earth's core is larger than expected for a body its size, with Theia's core and mantle fusing with those of Earth. Theia is an hypothesized ancient planet in the early Solar System that, according to the giant-impact hypothesis, collided with the early Earth around 4.5 billion years ago, with some of the resulting ejected debris gathering to form the Moon. That being said, I also think that Gaia Project is the better designed/more elegant game.An artist's depiction of the hypothetical impact of a planet like Theia and the Earth The solo is also more straightforward in TfM and has less upkeep. I feel that I want to play Terraforming Mars more than I do Gaia Project, mostly because it plays in a shorter amount of time (for us) than GP and its easier to understand with new groups of people. Honestly even after considering all these points its a wash. In addition, both games are begging for inserts to help organize them, which obviously adds to the cost. However TfM has 2 expansions (with at least 2 more coming) which will add to the cost. Is price an issue? TfM is much cheaper than GP at the moment (~$50 for TfM, ~$85 for GP). GP is almost theme-less as its focus is almost completely on its mechanisms. How thematic does your group want your games to be? TfM's end game mechanics are much more thematic than GP. TfM's card draws are completely random (but improved by drafting). On the other hand, GP also has a lot more strategic depth as a result (IMO).ĭoes your group mind randomness? GP has randomness with the round/final scoring tiles only. This can make it more difficult to pick-up and plan than TfM. I think one would need to ask some questions about themselves/their gaming group to decide which is better for them:Īre you into heavier euros? GP is definitely a heavier game, and is significantly more abstract than TfM. Put a gun to my head though: I'll go with Terraforming Marsīoth of these games are absolutely fantastic and in my top 10 right now (20 plays of Gaia Project, 42 plays of Terraforming Mars). TL DR: Don't make me pick a favorite among my children. ![]()
